ChanServ, on many IRC networks, is an IRC service which maintains channel registration and access information. If a channel is registered with ChanServ, its owners (and those they have designated) can use ChanServ to obtain control over the channel, gaining channel operator privileges. Most channel service bots also allow other sorts of channel management options, such as topic locks (in addition to +t), mode locks, and providing users automatically with operator status, half-operator status, voice, or other access, as designated by the channel owners. They may also provide some form of automated ban-list management.

There are several implementations of IRC services which have a ChanServ bot; some other services use other names, such as CS. The exact commands and features available depend on the service implementation and the network in question.

Shiplake Lock is a lock and weir situated on the River Thames in the village of Shiplake in the county of Oxfordshire, England. It is owned and managed by the Environment Agency. It is just above the point where the River Loddon joins the Thames.

Reach above the lock

The river skirts Shiplake on the Oxfordshire bank and eventually passes into Sonning. On the way are four islands Phillimore Island, The Lynch, Hallmead Ait and Buck Ait. The Thames Path stays on the Oxfordshire bank to Sonning, where it crosses the bridge to the other side below Sonning Lock.

Luggage locks || Non-strict two-phase locking

In computer science, non-strict two-phase locking, also 2PL, is a locking method used in concurrent systems.

The rules for 2PL are similar to those of Strict 2PL:

  1. If a transaction T wants to read/write an object, it must request a shared/exclusive lock on the object.
  2. A transaction cannot request additional locks on any object once it releases any lock, and it can release locks at any time (not only at commit time, as in Strict 2PL).

So, every transaction has a growing phase (it acquires locks) and a shrinking phase (it releases locks). 2PL allows only conflict serializable schedules, but doesn’t guarantee that deadlocks will be avoided.

2PL is one scheduling algorithm, sometimes used instead of:

  • simultaneous locking, simultaneous release (Disadvantage: redundant locking, no interactive transactions)
  • incremental locking, simultaneous release (Disadvantage: Deadlock)
  • simultaneous locking, incremental release (Disadvantage: rollback, redundant locking)
  • incremental locking, incremental release (Disadvantage: deadlock, rollback)

Luggage locks || Aviation and Transportation Security Act

The Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA, November 19, 2001) was enacted by the 107th United States Congress in the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The Act led to the development of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) within the Department of Homeland Security.

Prior to the Act, security screening was largely the responsibility of each airport. Counter agents asked three questions of passengers checking luggage:

  • Did you pack your bags yourself?
  • Have your bags been in your possession since you packed them?
  • Have any unknown persons asked you to carry anything on board?

Visitors had to pass through metal detectors and have their carry-on luggage X-rayed before entering the concourses, but X-raying of personal items was not required. A boarding pass did not have to be presented at the checkpoint, as non-travellers were allowed to enter the concourses.

Luggage locks || Bingley Five Rise Locks

Bingley Five Rise Locks is a staircase lock on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Bingley (). As the name implies, a boat going up the lock is lifted in five stages.

Description

In effect the 5-rise consists of five locks connected together with (as always with a staircase) no intermediate “pounds”: the lower gate of each chamber forms the upper gate of the chamber below. There are therefore five chambers, and six gates (the top and bottom gates and four intermediate gates). As the Leeds Liverpool canal is a wide canal, the chambers are 14 feet wide, and each “gate” consists of two half-gates, “hinged” from opposite sides of the canal. Each half gate is slightly more than 7 feet wide, so that the two halves close in a “V” shape (pointing “upstream”). Water pressure on the “uphill” side of the gate thus keeps it tightly closed until the water levels on either side are equal, when the gate can be opened and the boat moved to the next chamber (see canal locks for more information on how a lock is constructed and operated).

The 5-rise is the steepest flight of lock in the UK, with a gradient of about 1:5 (a rise of 59ft 2in over a distance of 320ft). The intermediate and bottom gates are the tallest in the country. Because of the complications of working a staircase lock, and because so many boaters (both first-time hirers and new owners) are inexperienced, a full-time lock keeper is employed, and the locks are padlocked “out of hours”. Barry Whitelock, the “locky”, after twenty years based here is now almost infamous on the local canals. Barry was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2006 New Year Honours List for “Services to Inland Waterways in the North”

History

It opened on March 21 1774 and was a major feat of engineering at the time. When the locks and therefore the canal from Gargrave to Leeds was opened in 1774 a crowd of 30,000 people turned out to celebrate it! The first boat to use the locks took just 28 minutes and the whole first trip is described here as it was in a newspaper of the time - the Leeds Intelligencer. The smaller Three Rise opened at the same time just a few hundred meters further down.

During 2000-2004, famous Leeds Chartered Surveyor, Gerwyn Bryan, lived in the famous cottage looking down on the locks, which appears in many pictures of the locks.

Tourism

The “flight” (it is a moot point whether a staircase is strictly a “flight”, used strictly the term means a group of locks separated by intermediate pounds, so each lock has its own top and bottom gates) is a major tourist attraction in the area. Most boats that pass through attract a lot of attention especially at weekends where they may be a crowd of thirty people or more watching a boat go up or down!

Maintenance

The staircase underwent extensive restorative maintenance in 2004,and again in 2006 when the lock gates and paddles were replaced. As is expected with such a feat of engineering it requires a lot of maintenance and is often on British Waterway’s list of winter stoppages for maintenance.

NSB BM92 is a Norwegian diesel railway multiple unit manufactured by Duewag. It is used for commuter trains around Trondheim (Trønderbanen), on Meråkerbanen (Nabotåget) and occasionally on Rørosbanen. The train is not equipped with as many amenities as the NSB BM93 which is used on longer services.

A BM92 trainset consists of two carriages. Four of the fourteen sets are equipped with a large luggage room. They were built between 1984 and 1985. On January 4 2000, a BM92 set with luggage room was lost in a fatal collision on Rørosbanen, the Åsta accident, which killed a total of 19 people.

Luggage locks || Fobney Lock

Fobney Lock is a lock on the River Kennet in the Small Mead area of Reading in the English county of Berkshire.

Fobney Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, and this stretch of the river is now administered by British Waterways and known as the Kennet Navigation. It has a rise/fall of 7 ft 8 in (2.24 m).

There have been ongoing plans to turn Fobney Island, adjacent to the lock, into a wetlands nature reserve.

Varistaipale canal is a Finnish canal in Heinävesi. The canal is a part of Heinävesi route (Heinäveden reitti), a route with six canals: Kerma, Vihovuonne, Pilppa, Karvio, Taivallahti and Varistaipale canals. The canal was built in 1911–1913 and has four locks. It is the biggest canal in Finland being the only canal to have this many locks. The height of drop totals 14.5 meters and the length is 1,100 meters.

Next to the canal there is a canal museum.

Luggage locks || Salmon Bay

Salmon Bay is that part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal–which passes through the city of Seattle, linking Lake Washington to Puget Sound–that lies west of the Fremont Cut. It is the westernmost section of the canal, and empties into Shilshole Bay, which is part of Puget Sound. Because of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the smaller, western half of the bay is salt water, and the eastern half is fresh water (though not without saline contamination–see Lake Union). Before construction of the Ship Canal, Salmon Bay was entirely salt water.

East of the locks, Salmon Bay is spanned by the Ballard Bridge, a bascule bridge that carries 15th Avenue traffic between Ballard and Interbay. West of the locks, it is spanned by the Salmon Bay Bridge that carries the BNSF Railway railroad tracks.

Created by Eli Whitney’s ( creator of the cotton gin ) nephews, Eli Whitney and Philos Blake, a mortise lock (also mortice lock in British English) is one that requires a pocket - the mortise - to be cut into the door or piece of furniture into which the lock is to be fitted. In most parts of the world, mortise locks are generally found on older buildings constructed before the advent of bored cylindrical locks, but they have recently become more common in commercial and upmarket residential construction in the United States.

The parts included in the typical mortise lock installation are the lock body (the part installed inside the mortise cut-out in the door); the lock trim (which may be selected from any number of designs of doorknobs, levers, handle sets and pulls); a strike plate, or a box keep, which lines the hole in the frame into which the bolt fits; and the keyed mortise cylinder which operates the locking/unlocking function of the lock body. However, in the United Kingdom, and certain other countries, most mortise locks on dwellings do not use cylinders, but have lever tumbler mechanisms.

The installation of a mortise lock cannot generally be undertaken by the average homeowner since it is labor intensive and requires a working knowledge of basic woodworking tools and methods. Many installation specialists use a mortising jig which makes precise cutting of the pocket a simple operation, but the subsequent installation of the external trim can still prove problematic if the installer is inexperienced.

Although the installation of a mortise lock actually weakens the structure of the typical timber door, a mortise lock does offer more versatility than a bored cylindrical lock, both in external trim, and functionality. Whereas the latter mechanism lacks the architecture required for ornate and solid-cast knobs and levers, the mortise lock can accommodate a heavier return spring and a more solid internal mechanism, making their use possible. Furthermore, a mortise lock will typically accept a wide range of other manufacturers’ cylinders and accessories, allowing architectural conformity with lock hardware already on site.

Some of the most common manufacturers of mortise locks in the United States are Baldwin, Best, Corbin Russwin, Emtek, Falcon, Schlage, and Sargent. Also, many European manufacturers whose products had been restricted to “designer” installations have recently gained wider acceptance and use.
